Post-Production (Editing)

The main purpose of this editing is to test whether personal narrative and documentary can be properly integrated. In the previous Blog, I mentioned the four points of perspective switching, camera angle, color and narration to complete the combination of personal narrative and documentary. Let me show you the results of my tests.

1. Perspective: Stranger - Photo - Notes)

This paragraph mainly tests the shift of perspective. From a shot of father and son on the street, to a picture of myself and my father, to a picture on my desk, and finally to the note I wrote. Throughout the editing, I used fade in  effects to complete the transition between the material. The key here is to complete the transformation from personal narrative to reality record by switching between different perspectives. When the note shot ended, the perspective eventually switched to my own face, and with the phone ringing, the documentary part began.

2. Camera Angle: Stranger - Photo - Notes)

What is tested here is the conversion of perspective through the Angle of the camera. During the shooting, I completed a change of perspective from the notebook to myself by lifting the camera with my hand. When editing, I combined this shot with the next wide shoot. The purpose is to let the audience understand that the camera Angle has changed, and the object of the narrative has changed. At the same time the audience understands that the control of the camera is not in the hands of the director, but in the hands of the photographed subject (which is me), completing the perspective shift.

3. Color: Film Tone - Documentary Tone)

What is tested here is to realize the combination of personal narrative part and documentary through the difference of color tone in post-editing. It was inspired by director Nolan's Oppenheimer. The first half of the clip was edited with an overall lime green color palette. I wanted to create a cinematic quality, and I added white mist filter,  and with the personal narration, the whole first half of the film is presented to the audience like a story. When I put the pen down and lifted the camera, here I used keyframes and the color transitioned from the lime green in the front to a normal color. When the camera is on my face, the color completes the transition. After that, the overall color of the documentary is the original color in the camera, without transition processing, and without adding any special effects. The purpose is to make the audience understand that a color represents a narrative Angle.

4. Narration: (Transition)

The test here was to make the transition from personal narrative to documentary through narration. In the post-production I record this narration: "I think I should master up the courage to find the truth". In the editing, I put this line in the part where I lift up the camera. When the narration ends, the scene cuts to  the wide shoot, and then the next clip is the part of the documentary where the phone call is made. Because I said find the truth and then the next shot is documenting the search for the truth, the linking of the personal narrative to the documentary is accomplished through this directive narration.

5. Music Use:
  • Narrative Part: Kosemura "Quiet"

  • Documentary Part: 王利民 “云边有个小卖部”
