Balance of the perspective: Music use in Post-prodection

Annotation:
  • In Chapter 16, Post-Production, the author mentions that the use of music can help film creators balance subjective and objective perspectives in personal documentaries.
  • The article mentions that editing without music allows the viewer to better listen to the sounds in the frame, helping to convey the message. Too much music can detract from the audience's audiovisual experience.
  • Also music should not be used before the rough cut. Music can create a strong subjective mindset in the filmmaker, which ignores the objective point of view and leads to an imbalance in the use of perspective in editing  (the creator should listen to the dialogue in the video before deciding on the music). Music can overemphasise emotion and should be used in moderation. Good use of music can guide the viewer's emotions and achieve better emotional resonance.
Test in my Film:
  • In the first rough cut of my film I used a lot of music for emotional guidance, and I thought that music + dialogue could better convey my emotions. However, after communicating with my teacher, he raised a question, "Too much music makes it hard for me to listen to the dialogue between you and your family, and also you will focus on showing your picture when you play the music, but I see very little of your family's reaction on the other side of the video call. As a viewer, I still hope you and your family can coordinate the proportions of the picture.”
  • Based on my teacher's feedback and knowledge from the literature, I realised that too much music in editing would give me strong subjective thoughts, and I wanted to show my reactions as much as possible like the viewer, and that would be too subjective. So I made two revisions, first removing the music and then re-watching the footage for editing. When the music was removed, I was more focused on the conversation while the picture switched between the video call and me. When I showed it to the teacher again, the feedback was that "both subjective and objective perspectives are present, and the content of the conversation is clearer."
