Reflection and New Challenges

Image
Reflection:      This film initially accomplishes a combination of personal narrative and documentary. Through testing from perspective transitions, camera angles, colors and narration I found that it was possible to combine two different film styles without compromising the authenticity of the documentary. In my tests I found that the color transitions were one of the most difficult parts. In Oppenheimer, the director switched perspectives by shifting between color and black-and-white. But in my film I couldn't use black-and-white to portray one perspective. The difference in color is not as big as the difference in black and white in the future production, I will add more white mist filter to achieve the difference in the texture of the images. Highlighting the difference between the personal narrative part of the movie and the documentary part of the picture. I can say that this test was successful. I also found 2 new challenges through this shooting, which is ...

Post-Production (Editing)

Image
The main purpose of this editing is to test whether personal narrative and documentary can be properly integrated. In the previous Blog, I mentioned the four points of perspective switching, camera angle, color and narration to complete the combination of personal narrative and documentary. Let me show you the results of my tests. 1. Perspective: ( Stranger - Photo - Notes)          This paragraph mainly tests the shift of perspective. From a shot of father and son on the street, to a picture of myself and my father, to a picture on my desk, and finally to the note I wrote. Throughout the editing, I used fade in  effects to complete the transition between the material. The key here is to complete the transformation from personal narrative to reality record by switching between different perspectives. When the note shot ended, the perspective eventually switched to my own face, and with the phone ringing, the documentary part b...

Filming (11. 24. 2023 - 11. 25. 2023)

11. 23. 2023 (Indoor Shooting) - 110 St James Road 11. 25. 2023 (Outside Shooting) - Buchanan Street                 The filming took 2 days in total. The first day was Friday, November 24th, which was the day that the main part of the documentary,  conversation with my family. The whole conversation took about 2 and half hours. I talked to my aunt and uncle about my confusion, but they kept avoiding my questions. The explanation they gave me was that they were trying to protect me by not letting me ask. The entire conversation I received a negative response that they did not support me to talk to my father.      The second day of filming was on Saturday, November 25th,   which was the day the personal narrative portion was filmed.   Mainly taking some photos of father and son on the street. Through these photos, I can cut into the photos of my father and I and realize the transformation of perspective. I am...

Test for my portfolio

Test: The film tests the natural combination of documentary and personal narrative cinema through the use of perspective switches, camera angles, color shifts and side transitions. Plan for my portfolio First Part: Introduce A 1 minute pilot film goes to introduce my subject. It's a documentary about family relationships and the film is inspired by my own family. Second Part: My concept, test my challenge ( Incorporate the documentary and personal narrative film) Plot Outline: 1.  I walked down the street and tried to record a father and son walking hand in hand. The camera shutter effect fixes the video on them walking hand in hand, and the image slowly fades to a picture of my father holding me when I was young, and then fades to a picture of me and my father on a table. (The transition from personal narrative to reality is accomplished by switching between different perspectives.) 2. I'm writing a diary with a pen (the content of the diary will be my narration):  "All...

Challenge for this project

Image
Incorporate the documentary and personal narrative film How to use technique from narrative base film to inform documentary film without compromised the notion of truth in the documentary                                       "Documentary Storytelling: Creative Nonfiction on Screen"  Written by: Sheila Curran Bernard "The Voice as a Narrative Element in Documentary Films" Written by: Ufuk Önen      Both books mention how combining narrative and documentary films can greatly increase documentary viewing. Also the inclusion of a filmmaker and taking the lead role in the film and telling the story himself will make the documentary more personal.      However, the premise is that there must be history or facts as a basis, not falsified facts, which would lose the authenticity of the documentary. Narrative Perspective “ By offering a...

Overlook my project

Image
(Notes was written on 10. 13. 2023) Personal story (early childhood, young adulthood) + talking to mother + communication with father + reaction to getting answers(Switch from personal narrative to documentray)  The whole movie will be divided into four parts Dad In Memory Use actors to recreate my life before 13 years old, it will guide the audience into my life, know what happened on me and then bring out my question "Why did my father leave, and was he disappointed in me before he left."Take the audience to find out the answer together. Exploration In the form of a documentary (flip the camera, break the fourth dimension and return to reality, through the action of the protagonist lifting the camera, the first half of the plot forgery will be shown to the audience, thus completing the narrative perspective shift from drama to documentary).   Communicate with my mom first and ask her what she thinks about what I did and what she thinks my dad's reaction will be l...

Impression after watching“人生第二次?缺丨一轮对命运说不的逆风长跑”

Image
Here are some notes I took      The protagonists of this movie are a group of children from divorced families. They grow up under the care of their father, Mr. Baijian(Homestay Parent) created a place called "Dream House" for them, which brings warmth and hope to these children who live in darkness. (Mr. Baijian)      The film employs a number of visual narrative techniques. With the use of composition, color matching, empty shots, long shots and other video narrative techniques, without violating the principle of authenticity, the subject of the film can be sublimated, bringing the audience visual and spiritual experience. Unlike traditional documentaries, which are mainly based on visual records, this movie uses storytelling techniques to narrate. This brings a lot of points of view. It is like a movie in its entirety, incorporating the story's emergence, growth, climax, ending and conflict without compromising the realism of the documentary. ...
